Ok, if that's the case, this isn't a big deal.  I suspect only a Gentoo
user could get their system in such a fucked up state.

It is.  I should have asked Yann what distro he uses.  At least I
haven't been able to reproduce this at all with FC4 or FC5.

I wonder if it's worth our effort to support the case where hal isn't
available.  hal is available on modern distros and in most cases, if
it's not already there, can be installed as easily as $PKGMGR install
hal.
