The selected button number is displayed through regular MPlayer OSD for a few 
seconds.
But you won't see any SPU displayed over the menu buttons themselves.
There are a lot fo patches for that (and for the whole DVD handling) but it'll 
take months
before they'll get reworked and merged.

xine is the best for DVDs, period.
MPlayer has several advantages but for sure not DVD handling.
