Early this year I noticed a problem with vf_overlay where updates to the overlay that occurred in between frames would cause stuttering in the video. I wasn't sure what the problem was, so I disabled the frame updates during the timing loops, which resulted in the overlay framerate being locked to the video framerate.
I spent a bit of time finally, and figured out the nature of the problem. I also fixed a couple segv bugs which were caused by recent libswscale changes. So the latest vf_overlay/vf_outbuf patch should be working pretty well now.
