I have not upgraded freevo yet.. (still 1.5) but I have this problem
also!  Only, for me; its 100% of the time it will hang at start-up.

However, it only happens during boot mode.  If take freevo out of my
runlevel and start it manually (via ssh or console) it works almost
every time.

With my "freeze" I always get a keyboard lock.  SSH is the only way to
get in to kill it.  This is hell for me as my wireless card hardly
ever gets signal lock :(.  WHich is why I removed it from my runlevel
and always start manually..

I'm installing ubuntu now, then I'll install 1.6.1 and let you's know
if I still have the problem.
