Ok I found the commit log for this.  I think returning an InProgress
object is justified, but I'd like to put the 'completed' signal back in.
It just seems intuitive for me, and although there is a rationale for
start() returning a InProgress object, it in practice ends up replacing
one intuitive behaviour with an unintuitive one.  I think it's ok to
have both methods for handling process exit.
