Hey guys! Just checking in with some comparison notes between the branch I've been working on and Freevo 1.7.0. Sit back, relax and get ready; this isn't good.
Freevo 1.7.0 is NOT stable in the least. The functioning 1.6.2 install that I have been working from was absolutely RUINED because of 1.7.0 instabilities. Furthermore, it appears I'm going to have to reload my entire OS because I can't locate whatever it was that has caused such harm to my system. The first (and worst) thing I noticed was that TV playback was horrible with a constant stutter/jump. I traced down the cause of this to an incompatibility with X compositing. It also seems that, in spite of the config settings, XvMC is forced with all video playback. XvMC on some legacy nVidia products (Driver branch 1.0.9631) is buggy at best. Forcing usage only results in bad playback and angry users. Second, I've found that not only was the video affected, sound was adversely affected as well. There is now, in spite of reloading my working branch from backup and recompiling my audio drivers, a persistent stutter in the sound playback using anything OTHER than 2-channel audio. Recompiling Xine from source and reconfiguring ALSA a thousand different ways hasn't made the slightest progress toward fixing this. Third, not all plugins work either. The USB Storage plugin crashes when attempting to enter a directory/menu. Previously, I'd had no problems using the USB Storage plugin. Reloading my working branch fixed the problem. Fourth, dual-tuner support is NOT functioning properly with Xine in ANY branch above 1.6.0. Either the Xine command must be edited to add the proper TV device or Xine must be manually configured to use a device other than the default. This should be intuited from the configuration file with minimal user intervention. Do yourselves a favor and (I've said this before) stay away from accessing hardware directly. You're inviting trouble by doing so. Does anyone remember xvidtune? Remember how badly it could screw up your video card if you set things the wrong way?? Interact with hardware through the drivers or the tools made for this kind of interaction. Don't risk damaging someone's machine through direct hardware interaction! Freevo 2.0 may become the greatest thing going but if it ruins or doesn't work on a NEW running system with X compositing and the latest ALSA, what good is it? __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
