The advantage of a diff over any other option (especially if you use
`svn diff') is that the output can be applied immediately, potentially
taking into account other changes in the surrounding code.

Manual retrofitting based on change marks is prone to error (both by
the markee and the committer). There are also very useful tools for
displaying/managing diffs.
