Should be possible, so long as your mplayer supports that vlc stream.

I would suggest that you break your problem into small steps:

You can also use a vlc client to check that the stream is being received
correctly.

Then get MPlayer playing the stream from the command line, this
eliminated anything that freevo is doing.

Finally, set up Freevo to use the same MPlayer command, checking with
CLIENT_DEBUG = 1 that the command line is correct in the main-X.log.
