I've set IMAGEVIEWER_ASPECT to 16.0 / 9.0 and the skin images and the image gallery get stretched. I think this variable is useful for people using anamorphic screens.
I've changed the font size to use 4 points less because I noticed that in the 800x450 skin the fonts where bigger than in the 800x600 skin without changing nothing about fonts. I suppose that the skin engine scales the fonts based in the height of the skin. I've also been trying to understand some of the TV menu screens but I found the skin code too complex.
