I made a new install from etch and then set the preferred packages to 
unstable.
I installed 1.7.3 then compiled 1.7.4 (freevo, kaa packages)on top of that, 
ignoring the package manager. I added in the required -dev packages with 
apt-get.
At no time did I have any trouble with my ivtv card.
Then i upgraded to 1.7.5 again by compiling the required packages) and still 
no trouble at all.
