It seems to work for me, I've been busy testing VCDs for the last couple 
of days (plus reinstalling DirectFB)

If VIDEO_PREFERED_PLAYER is not set then when you hit play on a VCD it 
uses xine to play the disc and when you select a title then freevo uses 
mplayer to play the track.

xine plays the disk much better mplayer, this could be to do with the 
software scaler that I was trying. Without the software scaler the 
picture was tiny and in the middle of the screen.

If you are still having problems then you need to post the vcd:// 
commands that are written to the main log.
