Hi,
I think it might be a good idea to activate more plugins by default. I
guess there are two reasons why a minimal plugin set on launch exists,
one is the belief that that users should configure the plugins they want
themselves, the second is that the plugins may (originally at least)
have not been stable.
A number of plugins that bring what are arguably core features in 1.9
have now been in use for a long time and should be relatively bug free.
Maybe it's time to consider enabling these by default? I know one of the
complaints of most new users is that Freevo is difficult to configure.
Enabling more features that are expected seems to make sense. On the
balance of things it's probably more advantageous to let those users who
don't want certain plugins enabled to explicitly remove them in their
local_conf.py rather than force new users to search for and learn how to
enable all the features they need.
Looking just at the TV features offered by Freevo 1.x plugins I'd say
there's a case to enable the following by default to give a 'full' user
experience out of the box.
plugin.activate('tv.categories')
plugin.activate('tv.genre')
plugin.activate('tv.search_programs')
plugin.activate('tv.recordings_manager')
plugin.activate('tv.view_favorites')
plugin.activate('tv.remind')
I haven't looked at the other plugin areas and I'm sure there will be
some views here about what should and shouldn't be activated but I
thought I'd open it up to the list. What do you think? Would Freevo
better serve it's users by having more plugins enabled by default or
should the minimal approach with users left to figure things out for
themselves remain?
John
