I got the ATI framebuffer driver working, only after patching with some older -ac patches or from a ppc dev tree. After that though, I there was no way to get it to come out of TVout. You can check the mplayer list, search for Macrovision and ATI to find more details of why no one will put their neck out to do the hack. (I'm assuming things can be taken from the gatos project, and it's not THAT much of a technical problem.)
Supposedly, you can use the run the ATI from the vesafb. But I couldn't, maybe because mine is a Sapphire (powered by ATI). My laptop (with SVideoOut) works fine with the vesafb, it has an old ATI Rage Pro chip in it.
