The short answer is that since Freevo is mostly written in Python, you can edit the source in your installed copy. Just find src/video/mplayer.py and edit line 299 Restarting Freevo is all you should need to do. No recompile is necessary.
The longer answer is that we should probably move this into the configuration files...
