One question, is it true that the primary display cannot be used when
the TV-out is being used?  Like you actually can't use Gnome or KDE on
one and have freevo on the other. thats the impression I get from the
docs..

Yeah, I followed the Howto to a tea..  I However i'm not on that PC but
his patches were postly written for 2.4.19 and i'm isuing 2.4.20.. 
Maybe thats the problem?

The other option is my mplayer is too old.  I downloaded the lateds and
greated last night..  I was using DirectFB 0.9.18, its the first verion
I downloaded so I wouldn't expect to see any crazy libs from 0.9.17
unless craxy redhat 8 shipped with them..  

So, I'll hopefully sqeeze in time to try the new mplayer, but really, if
you cant use gnome then I cant see an advantage of having it over
existing setups..
