Well, getting back to your original question, it would be fairly easy to copy and modify audio.cdbackup (cdbackup.py), to be transformed into a DVD backup plugin. For use in countries where it's legal of course.
Vobcopy is analgous to cdparanoia, Lame is analogous to mencoder....
