If it isn't broken, why go through the trouble?

In all seriousness; the advantage of the framebuffer is lower
overhead, quicker startup and this should translate into performance.

I originally was working on a very low end machine so the framebuffer
made a big difference, but I imagine it matters less on machines which
are mostly idle.

For the Matrox G400 cards, it's trivial to get it up and running; for
Nvidia, it might be harder, and I'm not sure if you'll get the same
level of hardware acceleration, so there might not be any tangible
benefit.
