Aha! I tried this last night. almost ALL of my problems are because I am
using redhat 9.0

cdparanoia is broken under redhat 9.0, as well as GCC as lirc will not
compile, and because of GCC acting wierd, mplayer is also acting wierd
causing many of the problems.

I completely reinstalled using slackware and all the problems went away.
mplayer is now running better (and compiles WITHOUT warning under
slackware.) and cdparanoia is also now behaving.

Thanks for your help! I guess the moral of the story is to avoid redhat
9.0 for now.

Have you tried running cdparanoia from the command line to see if
something odd is happening?
