use a program like dvdbackup and copy your complete dvd to HD. Then u can play 
the DVD with mplayer's -dvd-device /home/me/path/to/dvd, and i guess xine has 
the same option (it's in fact libdvdread or something like that that handels 
the reading , be it from hard disk or real dvd so both players should do 
fine).
