I can't speak to the TV quality, as I don't use that portion of Freevo. Hi-res movies look fabulous on the tv when played through Freevo.
As for RH8 vs. RH9, I went with 9 and have had no problems related to the OS.

Some one who understands, often I hear people say learn from the beginning, which is great, but I know I am not made that way...
I was in your shoes when I started my Freevo experience. It was a great way to learn!
Any particular guides / howto's that worked particularly for you, Extremetech has a good guide but there are big chunks missing for people just setting out.
