I didn't even put .bin in my extension list, it just worked!

Play around with the mplayer_args in your local_freevo.conf, try it on the
commandline, when i was on fbdev, is used mplayer's software scaler,  now
under X it works with only the fullscreen switch...

.bin files play fine in mplayer; no navigation obviously, but most VCD's
work without difficulty. I use bin files myself too, and I just put .bin
into my video extensions list.
