Haven't changed /dev/mixer at all and I'm not using oss. The MPLAYER_DEV_AO argument is set to alsa9 so then it does not use oss. Its odd because the user freevo runs as can change volumes using alsamixer fine. I've got to that first before runnign freevo now. Its very inconvienient at the moment.
