I've had the same problem, and got my answer from the gatos mailing lists.

The AIW cards use drivers from the gatos site. gatos.sourceforge.net
The problem with these cards is the drivers are not v4l compatible. They
display tv using xvideoextensions and do not export the video to the linux
kernel for use by mplayer, etc.

Xawtv and avview use the AIW cards by displaying the TV on the screen,
using the xvideoextension. It's a direct display of TV on the AIW card
itself,
the video never leaves the card. Mplayer requires the video to be exported
through the v4l interface, to system memory, for redisplay.

So in order to get the AIW cards to display TV in freevo, a plugin will be
required to use either xawtv or aaview as the application.

There is a driver for AIW cards, called km, for exporting the video through
v4l for recording, but the interface is not fully v4l compliant, so it
doens't work
with mplayer or xine.

I don't have all the specifics as to why km fails to work properly with v4l.

Jim Duda

right. :( The video out and everything worked fine, it was just like there
was something odd about the tv part of the card. I ended up getting a bt848
card from a friend for $5 and that works fine. You might consider just
adding an exclusive tv card...
