Thanks for the link but that seems to not help.

SDL 1.2.6 has serious syntax errors that make it incompatable with a modern
GCC so it will not compile the alsa sections or the dxr3 sections.

SDL 1.2.5 is broken, it will not even try to compile as it has errors in
it's makefiles.

the latest CVS snapshot has major bugs that are causing errors in the
autogen.sh.

anyone have a SDL snapshot that they were sucessful at compiling?  otherwise
I'm bailing on using a Dxr3 anymore and switchingto using a scan-converter
on the VGA and avoiding all these video headaches.
