Sounds like a mixer setting problem to me. Different cards have slightly different names for the mixer channels. At my place I have to set the mixer to capture from "Line" and set the volume for "Line" to something other then 0. In addition to that I have to set the volume for "Capture" to something other then 0.
Also I've just found out that I have to set CONTROL_ALL_AUDIO = 0 in local_conf.py or Freevo will set "Line" volume to 0 at random intervals.
