I had pretty much the same problem. ASUS P4S800.
I assume you have sound working (with xmms or whatever).
There were two things I had to do with my WinTV card.
First was to hook up the AUDIO-OUT on the tv card to the AUX-IN
in on the motherboard. This gave me mplayer sound.
That only fixed one problem, the second problem I had was with mencoder
and alsa (recording without sound) Here's what I had to do there (I think
this might be redundant, but I don't care, I get sound now on my records):
amixer set Aux capture
amixer set Aux 90% cap
Alsamixer did me no good until after this. Once I did this I was able to
adjust the gain with alsamixer.
Here are my relevant freevo settings (Note: I have to record on channel 4
since I have a DISH). Record quality looks and sounds just fine on my
system displayed on the TV or monitor. CPU hardly even notices anythings
going on even when viewing and recording at the same time.
