In my case I'm not using an xbox (that's why I've changed the topic) but
an Asus Pundit which seems to be a very good choice for building VCR's.

This case (including mobo + video card(dvi+rgb) + tvout(svideo) +
firewire + usb2 + powersupply + fan) cost 170 Euros in France and makes
only 27dB !
I've added a Celeron 2Ghz, 256 PC2700 and a Seagate Baracuda 7 120G (the
most silent HD I know). This box really rox ! I run freevo above and I
love it.

Some of my friends had slept close to it. I've asked if they were
disturbed during the night.. They answered
"Which PC are you talking about ?" ;o)

I can record on the fly the TV using a 640x480 resolution, 25fps and
2000 as bitrate and it just uses 57% of my CPU. (mencoder 1.0pre3)

PS: There is two PCI slots but there isn't much room around to install
big TV cards. The pinnacle PCTV (old & recent models) is ok but this is
quite touchy to install ;o)

It could be nice to build a freevo gallery where people can post their
hardware/software configuration, the average price it costs, the
performances they reaches, etc..
