The magic bit of information that made it all work for me in the end, was the realization that the TV output on the G450 only does 720x576.
When I grabbed at 758x576 from the TV card, I would get horrible judder on playback. Grabbing at 720x576 seems to have taken care of the problem - of course, I don't get max resolution, but it's nothing that I notice (and it sure beats the judder).
