I too have had this problem for a long time. I haven't done very much to fix it as I always thought it was a NFS problem. But since DVD-playback is also smooth for me I think we may be experiencing the same issue (and since I've now switched to gbit ether, I can probably rule out NFS). If you find a reason for this behaviour, please submit it to the list. I'm unable to be very helpfull in resolving the issue as I'm currently occupied with exams.
