With all this in mind, I have some questions: - Are there any secrets with G400 and DVDs that I do not know?
probably not if you have studied the documents about setting it up really carefully.
- Is DirectFB quality and performance considerable better than mga_vid's?
i would say yes. i switched to directfb maybe a year ago or so, because i thought the image quality was really superior. however, there are people who didn't notice the difference. if you aren't afraid of doing some installation steps by hand i would say you should give it a try.
- Are there any better display cards for Freevo than G400 (that can handle scaling with quality and gives better performance)?
i don't share your experience. i am perfectly happy with my g400. on the contrary, when playing low-bitrate divx files with my loomax dvd/divx player (which is based on the ess vibratto chipset) that i played with freevo before burning them on cdr or dvdr, i always realize how bad the picture quality of the standalone player really is due to the lack of proper postprocessing. i haven't really played dvd's with it as i only play stuff with freevo which is on the freevo machines harddisk. but i can tell that also svcd mpeg files look just fine.
To get a better hardware support, perhaps the next step would be to switch to Windows.
the hardware support on windows for tv-output is certainly better on windows in general. but i don't think the tv-output support of windows will be any superior to directfb's support of the matrox cards.
