Try taking the mplayer command that freevo runs (from /tmp/freevo/main-501.log?) and run it on the command line. If you get the same results remove mplayer options one by one (I think there's some post processing done by default). When your happy with the playback put the options in MPLAYER_ARGS_DEF. HTH
