> wow!
> it certainly looks very cool !!
Well, I heavily borrowed from XP Media Center screenshots, so I'm
ashamed to say that Microsoft deserves the credit for the cool look.
(Artists get to say they were "inspired," but I'm not an artist.)
'course, I think my version is superior, what with that really nice TV
icon in the lower left of the progress bar!

And yes your screenshots look a lot better !!!
But I was not only refering to the looks of your work :-), but also to the
idea behind it, meanwhile "inspired" by your system i did some investigation
on the possibilty of timeshifting, personaly i have a saa7134 based card, so
i have to capture the movie over mp1e, tried that, it worked, but the movie
got jerky and i got audio drops
(My system is a 1 p4 1.8 ghz, 768 mb with 2 IDE drives), i tried to capture
the data on 320x240 resolution, 32khz audio
It turned out that recording with mencoder on the same resolution, but using
mpeg4 had a higher CPU usage BUT also a better quality (not as jerky and no
audio drops). As you probably know simultanious vieuwing with
mplayer is also possible (for a short time, untill the player reaches the
original filesize) , however i didn't got the right player quality, perhaps
disk related (DMA is used for disk access, i guess diskaccess is standard
synchronious on fedora core 2) and by modifying cache settings it will be
better, but it will be on the edge of the performance.
another thing that would certaily work is the standard vlc player (from
videolan.org), this one has a buffering mechanisme as wanted (but of course
not suitable for your own box).
Having tried this, i guess the way to go for my is:
1) Buy a PVR250, use ivtv for capturing, saa7134 is too timecriticale
2) Wait untill your patch with the buffering mechanisme is standard in
mplayer so mplayer can continue to read from a "growing" file
3) if i want to timeshift: schedule the recording in freevo, record it with
idtv
3a) look at the recording just as viewing a movie, starting a few seconds
after the recording starts
The only disadvantage at the moment is that freevo can only record from one
source, so when timeshifting is active, one can not record another show, but
so be it.
4) erase the recording when not needed anymore
Personaly i don't care much for the filesize used by timeshifting, plenty of
hardisk is available
With kind regards
