I use 320kb for mp3 and really don't think that there would be such different in 44.1 or 48kHz. Because of the mp3 compresion.. Try to make some mp3 in 192 and 320 and let somebody else to play tham for you so you don't what format is playing and try to gess the what is playing.. Take time for the listening... But I don't want to argue with you.. Well back to the xmmms. Just active the plugin as usual... Than run xmms alone and setup the alsa audio and that should be it.. I don't think that I make some more setting.
