The advantage that XML offers is that it adds the hierarchy that Freevo config files are currently missing. The impact of a erro in XML format is indeed huge, on the other hand.
Maybe YAML (posted some days ago) could be an option here. I don't have experience with YAML, but it looks OK, for what I've read from the YAML site. It adds hierarchy without too much tagging.
