The problem with such actions is, that you are leaving the spirit of linux.
The OpenSource idea is what made software like freevo and it's components
what they are today. If you make them commercial, no matter how, you are
discouraging people to contribute.
Standartisation is a good thing, but use OpenSource standards. They are out
there, you just have to find them. I thought lirc was pretty good at that?
If anyone has to make money with freevo (I could understand that, have to
pay my life too), I woud suggest the donation way. Just look at meedio.
Since it has gone commercial, there doesn't seem to be any further
development. People still use it's free precessor.

Just my 2 cents on this...

I agree completely, however maybe making the control part of freevo pluginable also? So the current setup uses a Lirc plugin, and other more geeky types, like me, can code plugins for control via Spinx (http://cmusphinx.sourceforge.net/html/cmusphinx.php) or bluetooth or Wan or whatever. then the development of the lirc plugin would be "official" and others could maintain other plugins until they matured enough for official inclusion.
Anyway, I think a major strength in freevo in the expandability and plug-ins. If I wanted user friendliness config and few but matured features I'd linkely choose MythTv or something. Freevo has a matured and stable system for basic features (tv-recording, tv-guide, movie and music playing) and best of all it's extreemly lightweight compared to other sollutions.
On the interface the only thing I have to say is I'd like to see a little more "keyboard" friendliness.. maybe the inclution of an input.conf for mplayer which makes, say Volume control, set to the same keys as in the freevo osd.. same goes for tvtime and xine.. I assume its easier with remotes, but I dont have a functioning one of those..
a little more consistancy would go along way several places in freevo..as examples are if the system uses 24h clock. the recording schedule still uses 24h correctly, but the list of scheduled recordings is in 12h... and also the recorded time on the files are in 12h. also the idlebar time plugin doesn't translate to Locale correctly.

hmm.. that was supposed to be a short comment..
