This is a great little script that I have come across that makes putting your recorded TV shows onto CD's or DVD's that can play on standalone DVD players (either as VCD, SVCD, or DVD). Here is an example of how I use it.

http://tovid.sourceforge.net/index.html

tovid -normalize -svcd -full "filename.avi" "filename"
vcdimager "filename.mpg"
cdrdao write --device 0,0,0 --driver generic-mmc "filename.cue"

I would suggest using the tovid-interactive for your first time, very informative.

Also, for anyone that wants to save some space and make the files look a bit better, you can use the postproc utility.
