The only solution I found was to downgrade to python2.3. Yes, I also found that 
on MDK10.1 there was a much more extensive list of packages to install.

I stuck them all in a directory and plan to update the wiki later with this 
list as the list there is Fedora Core 2 specific.

But generally, the install was *much* less painful this time than it was about 
1-1/2 yrs ago when I last did it.

   I can start that, I have a just built current list application and
about every library that freevo uses from python, and perl. Had to add
about a perl modules to get xmltv to compile on Slackware. I also
discovered the issue with python 2.4 and xmlplus, looking for
saner/simpiler solution than downgrading to 2.3.
