I found I had to add a -vc argument.
yours will be different, but I had to use -vc ffmpeg12mc to use xvmc to play TV.

mplayer plays movie and audio files just fine but doesn't seem to be able
to get input from my TV tuner card. (This is the last thing I need to
finish before finally getting this thing into my living room.) Has anyone
else had this problem? It looks like it sees the tv signal OK. Below is
what I get at STDOUT: (I'm working on the no audio bit right now using the
btaudio drivers)
