Hi You do not need gmplayer, mplayer is enough!
I also use MPlayer1.0pre6 on a debian system, no problems here... You can get more debug information if you set the following in your local_conf.py DEBUG = 1 CHILDAPP_DEBUG = 1 Maybe you find a hint there. Moreover you can find the exact line which freevo uses to start mplayer with all options in the debug output. Try that command from a shell. Maybe it is one of the options freevo uses, that is responsible for your problems...
