I've been a long-time user of Freevo, and I've always used it under VESA mode. Lately, I've had some speed problems (especially with MPlayer) that I'm sure are related to using inefficient video drivers. I considered fbdev for a while, but not everything I want to use works with that, and it still may not be as fast as it could be.

My card is an ATI Radeon that could probably benefit from an X video driver. What are the pros and cons of switching Freevo to X? I'm about to reload the box, but I don't want to bother with X if it won't actually help me. Here's what I know:

Pros
----
More extensive driver options available.
Acceleration options in some drivers.
The ability to use Xine in addition to MPlayer.
Other X apps also available, like IVTV viewing stuff for debugging.

Cons
----
More complicated configuration.
More drive space used for system files (less for recording).
Longer startup times.
Need to plug in a mouse, even if it isn't used.

Can anybody help me expand this list?
