It is highly probable that using DirectFB with mplayer's dfbmga driver will give you superior video quality. Of course, I have no idea of the quality of your scan converter, but considering that there is no conversion necesary using DirectFB there should be less signal loss and, therefore, greater fidelity. Of course, depending on what OTHER things you use your freevo box for (emulators, web browsing, etc) it could be more trouble for you that it is worth for you to set up all of your apps again to work with DirectFB. I would recommend keeping your current setup, but playing with getting DirectFB working and seeing what the difference is before dumping a good configuration that works for you right now.
