Here's a few sites that helped me when Comcast forced me to switch to Digital

http://www.irblaster.info/
http://www.lirc.org/html/configure.html#multiple
http://www.xiaprojects.com/www/manuali/freevo/main.php

basically I mashed the 2 methods together since I had a DCT 2xxx series box but the serial port is either disabled or "not really a serial port". anyway the IRblaster method works well.

As far On-Demand programing I'm not going to be much help, since I just got Digital and it was pretty much to continue HBO service. I have the cable box set up using the composite out to the capture board (PVR 250) which gives me much better picture and sound. with comp in there is no channel changing being done by the capture board. so in theory whatever the cable box is sending out the capture board can record. You can still use the cable box remote to change channels with the IR blaster in place. creating a setup using multiple video groups may be of some help. I read somewhere that you can set up channels that use a specific video group allowing you to capture from several sources simply by telling freevo to record the specific channel associated with video group, this would be ok for say a camcorder, but I'm not sure if it would work for OD since you have to be able to see the feed to set up the program. possibly hooking the TV to both the freevo and the cable box with an AB switch or similar could allow you to monitor the feed from the cable box while requesting the OD program.

hope this helps.
good luck,

I'm considering making a FreeVo box of my own, but there are two concerns I have. First is my digital cable box. Since I use ComCast Digital Cable, I am required to use the ComCast Digital Cable Box to view anything on Digital Cable. Is there some trick for FreeVo to get around this? I know I had a VCR that had an attachment so that it could change the channel on the cable box for timer recordings. Is there something like this for FreeVo?

Also, can I record on-demand? Can I watch something using OnDemand and tell FreeVo to record the incoming video stream?

Thank you for all your help, I can provide more information if needed.
