As suggested, I upgraded mmpython to 0.4.9.
the dubious error message disappeared, but I still get the same behavior:
the DVD won't play, instead freevo browses the dvd and shows me the
directories.
attached is the files list of the DVD, in case it may help.
my freevo version is 1.5.3.

Hi,
you just encountered the now famous incompatibility between
an old mmpython version and the newer lsdvd version.
Just get the latest release of the former (mmpython), and
you should be good to go!
