On the themeing side of things, I imagine that this could best be achieved by setting a colour for new items, and maybe a different colour for unplayed items, and fading that colour (opacity change) based on the date of the file. So for instance one day could be equivalent to a 10% opacity change in the item highlight. I can do some mockups if that would help you.
The great thing about doing it this way is that we base our recent items soley on the file date time stamp, which is i assume much easier to write than the unplayed items would be, but if the theme support is already added for recent items, then it would be simpler to produce a similar effect for unplayed items.
