  By "lots of items" I mean thousands of files (mp3s for that matter). They are
not all in the same directory but organized in subdirectories.

  Yes. The weird thing is that even after I cd-ed in that directory, if I exit
end reenter it I get the "scanning" dialog again. Does this mean that freevo
didn't properly cache this directory the first time I entered it ? 
  For some directories I only see the clock on the right hand side of the
screen but it still takes at least a couple of seconds to cd. For the
directories that don't contain too many items (i.e. 10-20 or so) the 'cd' is
pretty quick.
