US HD is natively MPEG2-TS at speeds of up to 20Mbits/sec.
Anything you get from Satellite or cable is going to be
re-encoded to a lower bit rate at the loss of some quality
(MPEG4). The pcHDx000 cards capture true over the air
(VHF/UHF) HD data in its native bit rate and codec,
providing excellent quality, if you can get a good signal
and have the hardware with enough umph to play it back. I
use a pcHDTV2000 with an AMD64 3800+, a 64 bit gentoo OS,
and a 64 bit mplayer with the experimental 60fps
deinterlacing filter. It play it back over a PCI-E nvidia
6600GT card via DVI to a Sony HDTV. CPU pushes 60% in this
configuration (I have 2 2.8 GHz P4 AGP systems that can't
pull this off at all).

I doubt there is any way to capture the pseudo-HD streams
from satellite to a PC at this point without dropping it
to another encoder card via S-Video, which defeats the
purpose. There may be a solution using DVB hardware, but
I am not aware of one.
