These are usually multicast services (multicast is kind of a broadcast to a
group). Routers and WLAN access points handle these differently, i.e. more
efficient for their application. I don't know vlc but I'd say that you should
look for a method to multicast the stream in the 239.0.0.0/8 range (this is
the private multicast range, like 192.168.0.0/16 is for unicast).
