I continued investigating and in fact it is a bug.
To fix I just change line 66 of plugins/usbstorage.py from:
d = DirItem(self.mountpoint, parent, self.name,
display_type='image')
into:
d = DirItem(self.mountpoint, parent, self.name,
display_type=parent.display_type)
