As long as you have opengl working well enough, then a setting of gl2 in /etc/freevo/freevo.conf (on my gentoo setup) should work well enough. It will give you a bit of hardware help, which you won't get on x11. Saying that, x11 will probably default back to xv playback, as freevo is semi intellegent.
