Thanks for the suggestion.  I had some time to experiment this afternoon when 
the kids were napping, and here's what I found I needed to do (for the 
reference of any others with similar problems):

In local_conf.py , I needed to un-comment the XINE_* configuration statements 
as needed (command and args).  There does not seem to be defaults like the 
MPLAYER_* ones.

Add to local_conf.py
plugin.remove('video.mplayer')
plugin.activate('video.xine')

Hope that helps someone!  Hopefully Ubuntu will fix their mplayer packages 
sometime soon... There's a few mplayer-dependent projects filing bugs on the 
Feisty packages.
